Which is best for me?
This is the number 1 question from customers purchasing a deer feeder for the first time.
The feeder shown to the right is a Permanently Installed model.
It has its legs buried in the ground and is the most secure feeder
we offer. If you positively know where you wish to set a feeder,
this is the feeder for you and our recommendation. It will not
tip over and with clean crisp design, its appearance is more elegant.
By far though, our most popular feeder is the Free Standing model.
Why? Simple, having the ability to relocate your feeder is a real plus.
It allows you to place the feeder in one location to begin and move it
closer to the desired feeding location as your deer become accustom
to your feed offering. Also, a moveable feeder makes lawn maintenance and off season storage much easier.
Spiked Feet - As shown to the left. Each free standing feeder comes with landscaping spikes to secure it in place. Although, the Free Standing Deer Feeder is already very secure due to it oversized feet, the ability to spike the feeder in place will be appreciated on those windy nights.
The Little Deer Feeder is supplied with 1 landscaping spike. The Standard and Extra Large have 2, while the Ultra Large and Magnum each have 4. Once spiked in place, they will not move.

Which one did I need?
the small sized Little Deer Feeder (which can also be used very successfully as a bird feeder) and people
who live in high deer population areas or who have been feeding for a longer time, prefer the larger sizes.
A great question and very difficult to answer! Hurley-Byrd Deer Feeders come in capacities from 8 to 45 pounds. A feeder with 45 pounds of capacity may sound like a lot, especially to the wild bird feeding world. But, 45 pounds of whole shell corn can be eaten in an evening by a good population of deer.
The 8 pound feeder is designed for someone who may wish to attract just one deer. We have found over time, people who live within city limits, tend to like
Here is a baseline in picking a feeder:
Little Deer Feeder: 8 pounds of capacity: One or maybe two deer.
Standard Deer Feeder: 15 pounds of capacity: Two or three deer.
Extra Large Deer Feeder: 25 pounds of capacity (our #1 selling deer feeder): Three to five deer.
Ultra Large Deer Feeder: 35 pounds of capacity (our second best seller): Five to seven deer.
Magnum Deer Feeder with 45 pounds of capacity: Seven plus deer.
Keep in mind, you can always put 15 pounds of feed
in a 35 pound capacity feeder but never 35 pounds in a
15 pound feeder. If you have concerns about the capacity
being too little, opt for the next larger and use its versatility.
Secondly, it is ALWAYS better to spread your deer
feeding station across two feeders instead of one large.
Deer have a hierarchy that is rigorously maintained and
one feeder can be dominated by one or two deer while
the others wait. Two or more feeders spread across your property will allow the less dominant
deer to enjoy your feed offering and discourage aggressive action (fighting).
Quality Feeders, Ease of Assembly and Varied Designs
Like all Hurley-Byrd products, each Deer Feeder is
completely handcrafted from the finest western red cedar throughout then assembled with a mix of stainless steel and ceramic coated bronze screws.
Each feeder then receives an application of our proprietary penetrating oil finish, which is not just wiped on. Each component is completely submerged in a large
vat filled with finish, allowed to soak and finally hand rubbed to work it deep into the wood. This produces a feeder like no other and when you set up
a Hurley-Byrd feeder you will know you are using the finest possible.
Setting Up Permanently Installed Deer Feeders
Permanently Installed Deer Feeders are supplied with sturdy and rot resistant cedar legs which,
depending on the model, are buried 8" to 10" into the ground setting the feeder at a comfortable 24" feeding height.

The Little Deer Feeder and Standard Deer Feeders shown above retain our original vee shaped design.

The Extra Large, Ultra Large and Magnum Deer Feeders received an upgrade to our new
Heavy Duty Flat Bottom design for
strength and easier feed consumption.

Free Standing Deer Feeders
Ease of Assembly
Just like the Permanently Installed feeders noted above,
the Free Standing Deer Feeder comes with carriage bolts,
washers and wing nuts for easy assembly of the legs to the
trough. In addition, we provide two LARGE brass screws that
secure the feet to the legs. A Phillips head screwdriver and 5
minutes of your time has this feeder together and set out
ready for action. Fill with feed, sit back and enjoy.
Mortise and Tenon Upgrade
Foot Attachment:
No cheap means of attaching the feet!
To get it just right, we had to build a machine to cut the tenons on the legs.
This type of mortise and tenon provides a strong attachment and allows the foot to swivel and meet the lay of the land.
New Cedar Feet & Landscaping Spikes:
On all but the Little Free Standing Deer Feeder
(shown below), an oversized foot with landscaping spikes is used for added strength and stability.
Little Deer Feeder:
The Little Deer Feeder comes with a smaller
foot due to its overall light weight and small
feed capacity. It also receives one leg to trough
attaching bolt allowing the trough to be set
at an angle facing your home for people
who wish to use it as a bird feeder.

Is it easy to assemble and set up?
YES! The supplied hardware allows for a no-tools assembly.
All Permanently Installed Deer Feeders* come with 4 carriage
bolts, washers and wing nuts . This provides easy assembly and
disassembly for storage, lawn maintenance or cleaning.
Simply bolt the legs to the trough and install.
*(The Little Deer Feeder comes with 2 of each hardware item)
Set-up: The Permanently Installed Deer Feeder
legs are buried 8" for the Little and Standard Deer Feeders.
The Extra Large, Ultra Large and Magnum require 10"+ due
to their extra capacities. Simply dig two holes to the proper
depth, set the assembled feeder in the holes, level side to
side and end to end, backfill the holes, fill with feed and enjoy.
